Auslan Video: What is Deaf Awareness Training?

00:07 As many countries and communities have their own languages

00:11 this is the same for the deaf community.

00:14 They have their own language which is called Auslan.

00:16 Many people do not know that deaf people do have their own language and are often surprised.

00:21 This is why we have DAT - to teach different organisations, businesses and schools

00:36 It is for people to understand deafness and that deaf people have their own community

00:41 DAT is there to educate, encourage and improve communication between deaf and hearing people

00:52 DAT can be 1 to 2 hour classes for 10 to 30 people

01:20 giving strategies such as contacting a deaf person - it can be through TTY

01:26 SMS, MSN, Oovoo, Skype or the NRS (National Relay Service)
